It is only natural for some dogs to gain weight as they age. They are not as active as they were when they were puppies. Maybe you give him or her an extra treat, or you get outside less in the colder months. You do not, however, want your pet to become obese. This can lead to a host of health problems like diabetes, arthritis, breathing problems, and heart disease. Here are four strategies to help your dog maintain a healthy weight.

See the vet. There is no better person to determine what your pet's weight should be. He or she will take health history into account and help your develop a diet and exercise plan. If your pet is obese, the vet will recommend specific food to get him or her back on track.

Practice portion control. Speaking of diet, do not over feed your dog.  Ask your vet about the serving size for your dog; pet food packaging may not be correct in every case. And no snacking between meals!

Stay active. Start exercising with your dog regularly. It's a win-win for everyone! Dogs should have between 30 and 60 minutes of good exercise a day.  This can be spread out into several brisk walks or a run or if older a leash walk rather than a quick "out to pee" and back in the house.

Keep up hydration. Make sure your dog's water bowl is always full with cool, fresh water. This may stave off hunger.

Give lots of attention. If your dog is begging for food or a treat, offer him your affection. Petting and playing with him or her will keep your dog busy—and engaged!
