Upper respiratory infections. This is one of the most common kitten illnesses, with symptoms like sneezing, coughing, runny nose, runny eyes, decreased appetite, and/or lethargy. Highly contagious, it is easy to pass from one kitten to another. It's important to visit the veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment at the first signs of illness.
Intestinal worms. When a kitten experiences weight loss or diarrhea, he or she could be suffering from intestinal worms. Roundworms and hookworms are the most common, and occur from ingesting worm eggs through another cat's fecal matter. It's important for kittens to have routine fecal examinations and deworming and to be wormed as a young kitten and prior to giving any kitten away. Check with your veterinarian for a good kitten worming schedule.
Ear mites. Kittens that have ear mites will often shake their heads and scratch their ears. Another sign is a blackish brown discharge coming out of the ears—similar in appearance to coffee grounds. They may also have sores in that area. Liquid drops in the ear, repeated daily for several days, will take care of ear mites and is an easy process
Fleas. This is another common problem that can affect kittens, but fortunately is easy to treat. Fleas are contracted from being outside or from being in contact with other animals. Symptoms include itching and black specks that resemble pepper on the kitten's body. They can also carry diseases to other kittens if left untreated. There are a number of topical medications on the market to treat fleas.
Diarrhea. This common health issue can be result from a number of causes—including intestinal parasites, stress, or a change in diet. A visit to the vet can diagnose the cause.
