From incised wounds, tears, and puncture wounds to abrasions and contusions, horses are prone to a number of physical wounds. Depending on the severity and type of wound, methods of care can vary. Regardless of what kind it is, all wounds should be cleaned to decrease the chance of infection prior to further treatments. Assisi Animal Health discusses four methods of wound care for horses.

1.   Primary closure care. With this method, wounds are closed at the time of examination using sutures, staples, or glue. This is generally used with injuries that are easier to manage, such as incised wounds with smooth, clean edges.

2.   Delayed Primary closure care. In cases of delayed care, wounds are usually closed after several days following daily cleanings and debridement, which is the removal of dead or dying tissue. At that point, the next step is to determine whether the wound will need to be closed or treated as an open wound. Delayed primary closure care is most common with minor lacerations and incised wounds that may be infected.

3.   Open Wound management. Large lacerations or de-gloving injuries (injuries that expose bone) are generally dealt with through open wound management. Puncture wounds are often accompanied by infection and may be treated as an open wound as well. These types of wounds respond well in regulated, moist environments and must be bandaged appropriately. Using specially formulated wound dressings, such as calcium alginate with absorbent foam pads, along with topical ointments provides better protection against infection and promotes healing.

4.   Maintenance. The Assisi Loop is a targeted pulsed electromagnetic field technology that provides clinical solutions for wound care, pain management, inflammation, and post-surgical healing. Using the Assisi Loop in tandem with other treatment modalities can accelerate the wound healing process and help your horse with pain management.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions complete the Circle of Care® — the collaboration of veterinarians and owners in animal health and healing. Our company helps veterinary professionals and owners improve the quality of life for companion animals using the Assisi Loop, the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA-cleared technology used on humans. The device uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery.
