PITTSBURGH, May 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Isotope Technologies (AIT), a company focused on developing critical, unmet measurement needs in environmental, healthcare and industrial segments by applying its patented-protected technology platform, announced today that it has established operations in a 1,500 square foot analytical facility in the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG) life sciences campus on the south side of Pittsburgh at the River Park Commons Business Center.

Applied Isotope Technologies is committed to innovation in the metrology field. Since its incorporation in 2003, AIT has entirely focused on the creation of new technologies, measurement tools, products and services for environmental and biological analyses. The company's products play a critical role in providing significantly improved levels of accuracy, sensitivity and convenience in trace and sub-trace analyses using an important class of analytical instruments called mass spectrometers.

Over the past ten years, Mass Spectrometry ("MS") has become the dominant analytical instrument for detection of analytes that must be measured at very small quantities. The ability to identify and accurately measure complex chemical structures by the MS promises to be significant and transformational in several multi-billion dollar industries.

AIT will offer its unique analytical services based on its licensed technology platform at the Sidney Street facility. The company's patented technology platform is based on a transformational measurement invention and a number of automation tools collectively named IDEA™. When IDEA™ is implemented; test results are produced at unprecedented and legally-defensible accuracy. IDEA™ has become a global gold standard since its codification as a national method (RCRA EPA Method 6800) in 2008. This level of capability and performance is currently impossible by any other singular analytical instrument or technology.

"The EPA Method 6800 (and IDEA) is highly valuable in many fields for a number of applications, especially when the analytical results affect the outcome of an environmental dispute with high financial implications or reveal potentially life-saving information about a disease through biomarker analyses," said Matt Pamuku, President and CEO of AIT. "Industry relies on AIT's analytical services to obtain accurate information about industrially and environmentally undesirable toxins. Our results assist in the removal of these toxins more effectively in the environment through remedial action or in human body through effective medical regimes."

AIT's new analytical facility is equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometers adapted to implement IDEA to analyze a wide range of environmental, industrial and biological samples. The company's analytical kits, containing consumable standards and IP-protected software, are currently purchased and used by a number of government and academic institutions, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes for Technology and Standards (NIST).

The new facility will allow AIT to work on the automation of several of its popular tests. The fully-automated tests will be aimed for high-throughput applications where large numbers of samples can be analyzed unattended.
