It is in a puppy's nature to chew and teethe—it is their way of exploring the world and gauging how the objects feel. Unfortunately, teething and chewing can also result in damage to your household items and possessions. Assisi offers four tips to help you manage your puppy's chewing and teething pain.

Teach your puppy to leave it alone. As soon as you bring your puppy home, teach it to drop objects. Play a tug of war game with your puppy and one of its toys. When you want the puppy to drop the toy, say a stern "Leave It" or "Drop It" and when the puppy drops the toy, give it a treat. Then, replace with treat with another toy, and alternate between the toy and the treat, until the puppy understands the command.

Offer a trade. When your puppy is chewing something inappropriate, tell it no, and give it a toy you know it likes, and praise your puppy when it chews on the proper toy.

Give it a chew or rope toy. Offer your puppy a chew to massage its teeth and gums. Some toys can be frozen, which will offer extra relief. Rope toys can clean your puppy's teeth and gums, and teach it how to chew properly. Rinse the rope toy every couple of days with plain soap and water.

Feeding your puppy. Depending on the age of your pup, be careful to soak food so it is easily chewed and swallowed.  Keep the pup quiet immediately after feeding, by putting him in his crate or resting space for at least 30 minutes and then immediately out to eliminate.  Always reward good behavior with an appropriately sized treat.    He should learn to take his treat gently from your hand, and it is a great tool when encouraging "come."
