NEW YORK, Nov. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- American Skin Association (ASA) announced that it has received the coveted 4-star

rating from Charity Navigator, the nation's premier assessor of charities. The honor is only awarded to charities exceeding industry standards and outperforming most charities in their area of philanthropy. According to the requirements, 4-star organizations
illustrate the highest level of responsible fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

Established over 30 years ago to serve the now more than 100 million Americans afflicted with skin disorders, ASA and its affiliates have sponsored over $50 million in grants to support talented young scientists who have gone on to become top researchers in their fields. They work to find cutting-edge methods to prevent, detect, and treat skin cancer and other skin diseases. ASA has also made crucial investments in the well-being of future generations, putting great effort and resources into educating young people about sun safety and skin health.

"It is with tremendous pride that we accept this important recognition from Charity Navigator," said ASA Chairman Howard P. Milstein. "Our Board of Directors and staff work tirelessly to maintain an efficient and transparent organization, ensuring the highest possible portion of ASA's budget is spent on funding crucial dermatological research."

ASA President, Dr. David A. Norris, added, "This is a wonderful recognition! Having ASA acknowledged as a financially trustworthy and responsible organization enhances our ability to fund important research and educate youth on sun safety and skin health."

In today's ever-changing philanthropic environment, donors seek transparency and accountability from the organizations they choose to support. This 4-star rating reconfirms that ASA is worthy of their donors' confidence and generosity.

"This is our highest possible rating and indicates that your organization adheres to sector best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. Attaining a 4-star rating verifies that American Skin Association exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in your area of work. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets American Skin Association apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness," said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO, Charity Navigator, in a letter to ASA.

ABOUT CHARITY NAVIGATOR

Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator has become the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. In our quest to help donors, our team of professional analysts has examined tens of thousands of non-profit financial documents. We've used this knowledge to develop an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess over 9,000 of America's best-known and some lesser known, but worthy, charities.

Specifically, Charity Navigator's rating system examines two broad areas of a charity's performance; their Financial Health and their Accountability & Transparency. Our ratings show givers how efficiently we believe a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and their level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information. In the not-too-distant future, we also plan to rate charities' reporting of their results. We provide these ratings so that charitable givers/social investors can make intelligent giving decisions, and so that the nonprofit sector can improve its performance.
