The states considered for the New England ranking included Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Each nursing school in the region was evaluated on the following three dimensions: The institution's academic prestige and perceived value; the breadth and depth of nursing programs offered; and student success, particularly on the NCLEX national licensure exam.

The National Council for Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a nationwide examination for the licensing of registered nurses in the United States and Canada. To ensure public protection, each board of nursing requires candidates for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination. NCLEX examinations are designed to test the knowledge, skills and abilities essential for the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry-level. AIC's pass rate is consistently above the national average.

According to Interim Dean of the School of Health Sciences Karen Rousseau, PhD, RN, "We are very proud of the dedication, motivation, commitment, and diversity of our nursing students who strive to be the very best. Central to American International College's mission is to provide access, opportunity, and inter-professional collaboration to scholars in the School of Health Sciences."

Founded in 1885 as a school for international immigrants, AIC became a coeducational institution in 1892, making it one of the first colleges in the region to educate women. The College offers BSN and RN-to-BSN courses for undergraduate students, and introduced its MSN program in 2005, offering three areas of concentration: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), nursing administration, and nursing education. The RN-to-BSN and MSN programs are fully online, providing much-needed flexibility for working nurses.

The AIC School of Health Sciences additionally offers undergraduate degrees in public health and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in exercise science, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. More information is available online at aic.edu.
