Small Business Innovation Research Program Provides Seed Funding for R&D

CENTREVILLE, Va., Feb. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Altrix Medical, LLC has been awarded a National Science Foundation

(NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for $224,502 to conduct research and development (R&D) work on a miniaturized automated external defibrillator smartphone case.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) kills more than 325,000 Americans each year outside of the hospital and can cause death if it is not treated in minutes. A miniaturized AED embedded in a smartphone case will save lives by making these devices more available, ensuring those who carry them are reachable by emergency medical services, and augmenting AEDs with native smartphone features like GPS and telemedicine. Through this research, hundreds of thousands of lives will be saved each year.

"The National Science Foundation supports small businesses with the most innovative, cutting-edge ideas that have the potential to become great commercial successes and make huge societal impacts," said Barry Johnson, Director of the NSF's Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships. "We hope that this seed funding will spark solutions to some of the most important challenges of our time across all areas of science and technology."

Dan Fleck, Principal Investigator for the award, said "We are grateful for the opportunity to drive this research forward and help make these important devices more available to people at risk of sudden cardiac arrest."
