Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) kills more than 325,000 Americans each year outside of the hospital and can cause death if it is not treated in minutes. A miniaturized AED embedded in a smartphone case will save lives by making these devices more available, ensuring those who carry them are reachable by emergency medical services, and augmenting AEDs with native smartphone features like GPS and telemedicine. Through this research, hundreds of thousands of lives will be saved each year.

Dan Fleck, Principal Investigator for the award, said "We are grateful for the opportunity to drive this research forward and help make these important devices more available to people at risk of sudden cardiac arrest."
