Advisory - Unauthorized "Saj" kratom products seized from two Edmonton stores may pose serious health risks

IssueHealth Canada is advising Canadians that several "S?j" brand kratom products were seized from two Edmonton stores (S?j, located at Sherbrooke Plaza, 11839 St Albert Trail, and Jupiter, located on 12841 97^th Street NW). Kratom products are not authorized by Health Canada and may pose serious health risks.

It is illegal to sell any health products in Canada without authorization from Health Canada.

Who is affected

• Consumers who have bought or used the affected products.

• S?j Bali Kratom 30g powder, 90g powder, 15 capsules, 30 capsules, 90 capsules
• S?j Maeng Da Kratom 15g powder, 30g powder, 15 capsules, 30 capsules, 90 capsules
• S?j Thai Kratom 15g powder, 30g powder, 90g powder, 15 capsules, 30 capsules, 90 capsules

What consumers should do

• Stop using these products. Consult your health care professional if you have used these products and have health concerns.
• Read product labels to verify that health products have been authorized for sale by Health Canada. Authorized health products have an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN), Natural Product Number (NPN) or Homeopathic Drug Number (DIN-HM). You can also check if products have been authorized for sale by searching Health Canada's Drug Product Database and Licensed Natural Health Product Database.
• Report any health product adverse events or complaints to Health Canada.

What Health Canada is doingHealth Canada seized the products from the retail locations. Should additional retailers or distributors be identified, Health Canada will take appropriate action and inform Canadians as necessary. Health Canada is also working with the Canada Border Services Agency to stop kratom products from entering Canada.

BackgroundKratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a herbal product that may pose serious health risks when swallowed or inhaled. Side effects include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, seizures, liver toxicity and excessively rapid heartbeat. Kratom has been linked to both narcotic and stimulant-like effects, and has potential for abuse and dependence. Health Canada has not authorized the sale of any product containing kratom.
