APS Healthcare Names Health Management Industry Leader, Richard Chung, M.D., Chief Clinical Officer

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- APS Healthcare, Inc. today announced the appointment of Richard Chung, M.D., as Chief Clinical Officer. In this role, he will have oversight and strategic leadership of clinical program design and operation, health intelligence, quality improvement, and clinical training. He joined the company on February 28, and reports to APS' president, Jerry Vaccaro, M.D.

"Rick is a nationally recognized thought leader and advocate for health care innovation.  He brings to APS extensive experience in population health management and the integration of treatment for individuals with complex health care needs including those with both severe mental illness and commonly co-occurring physical health disorders," said Vaccaro. Most recently Chung had been a Senior Vice President for BCBS of Hawaii (Hawaii Medical Service Association or HMSA), where he was the Co-Director for their HMSA Center for Innovation in Health Care.  At HMSA his charter included the supervision and development of HMSA's demonstration projects for the patient-centered medical home, HMSA's Integrated Health Management Solutions strategy, acting as HMSA's representative on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Island Beacon Communities Grant from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and the integration of primary and behavioral health care.

Prolific as an innovator of clinical program design and development of the patient-centered medical home, Chung was an early proponent of health care systems now recognized as accountable care organizations (ACO).

Chung received his M.D. from Boston University and his B.A. from Northeastern University.  He holds a medical license in Hawaii.  He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
