CHICAGO, June 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American College of Prosthodontists is pleased to announce The New York Times bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell as the Keynote Speaker at the 40th Annual Session of the American College of Prosthodontists on Nov. 3-6 in Orlando, Fla.
As the College celebrates its 40th Anniversary, plan to attend the prosthodontic meeting of the year where Gladwell will share his insights during Thursday's Scientific Session keynote address, sponsored by Ivoclar Vivadent. During his presentation Gladwell will explore his theory on “outliers” as it relates to prosthodontists and the specialty. “The term ‘outlier’ refers to any individual or phenomenon that ‘lies outside of an ordinary experience,’ and a specialty such as prosthodontics clearly fits into that category,” Gladwell explained. “We don’t need that kind of help in understanding what makes someone a good automobile mechanic. But we do when it comes to explaining success in a highly competitive specialty.”
When considering the meeting's theme, "Better: Improving Our Routine Practices," Gladwell believes, anyone – whether a seasoned professional or someone just starting out in their career – can devote themselves to improvement. "There doesn't seem to be any age-specific window where this practice has to occur. It tends to happen early in life only because our educational institutions are sent up to serve youth – and it's easiest for young people to be that single-minded about something," Gladwell shared. "But given that most cognitively complex fields are in a state of constant flux, I would guess that the period of skill acquisition in many cases would have to be ongoing. Tennis today is a lot like tennis ten years ago. But the same is not true of prosthodontics."
