The Academy for Advancing Leadership (AAL) convenes its Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

ATLANTA, Sept. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- AAL's annual, onsite Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program

engaged 58 health educators and practitioners across 34 academic and clinical institutions. This four-day interactive program took place at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) from August 19 to August 22, 2018.

Participants engaged in case-based and problem-solving learning, taught by highly esteemed leaders and educators in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and psychology. ITL instructors showcased evidence-based methods and strategies for: shaping a teaching philosophy, interprofessional education and collaboration, critical thinking and evidence-based practices, instructional course design, effective clinical teaching, enhancing learning environments to maximize student motivation, developing rubrics, assessing student learning outcomes, giving constructive feedback, and calibrating skill-based performance. In addition to learning from the award-winning instructors, participants networked with dozens of peers and colleagues–an ITL feature that was highly valued by program participants.

ITL participant Dr. Kurt Kasper, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering & Orthodontics at UTHealth School of Dentistry, commented: "The program provided an excellent overview of key topics in healthcare education appropriate for educators at any stage of their career. The instructors challenged me to define who I am as a teacher, to gain a deeper understanding of my students, and to explore creative ways to engage in outcomes-driven teaching and assessment. Even after a decade in higher education, I found tremendous value in the ITL program, and I am equipped to make a greater impact moving forward as an educator."
