Ganesh Vemulkar, a 42-year-old, short filmmaker gives a new lease of life to 8 people by donating his 6 organs. The patient complained about severe headache for 2 days and was under medication prescribed by his family doctor. On the third day he had incessant headache, vomiting and one episode of generalised tonic, clonic seizures. He was brought to the emergency department at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital in an unconscious state, on April 6th, 2022. He was suspected to have cerebral venous thrombosis which has a high mortality rate and MRI confirmed the diagnosis. He was immediately shifted to ICU and connected to the ventilator and appropriate treatment was given to him. Without any further delay, the patient was taken to emergency surgery to decompress the brain (frontotemporalparietal craniectomy). In spite of all the appropriate treatment, the patient didn’t respond to the medication and was declared brain dead on April 13th, 2022, at 5 PM. He is survived by his wife and a 4-year-old son.

The Neurology team consisting of Dr P C Mohan (Senior Consultant, Neurologist) and Dr Kranthi Mohan (Consultant, Neurologist) at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital: Firstly, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Ganesh who is going through a rough time of their life. Also, thank his family for giving the gift of life by donating his organs to 8 more people who are terminally ill. This incredible act of kindness by 1 family can save many families associated with patients with acute illness.

All the organs of the patient were distributed through Jeevasarthakathe out of which 1 kidney, was used to treat patient admitted at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital waiting for transplants on the same day. The patient was suffering from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)for a prolonged period of time. She was under dialysis and listed her name for transplantation a few months back.

Srikanth Vemulkar, Uncle of the patient: It is essential to understand the early signs of cerebral venous thrombosis (a type of stroke) because sometimes this happens gradually. Some of the prominent signs including unexplainable frequent headaches, dizziness, difficulty in speaking, weakness or numbness in the body are some of the signs which must not be ignored.

Soon after experiencing the symptoms, one must approach a doctor without a delay because the treatment is considered more affective within 3 hours after the onset of the symptoms.

Biju Nair, Cluster COO, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Bengaluru: The pain of losing a loved one is certainly immense; however, it is good to see that humanity prevails and because of the family decision of the patient, 8 more patients have received hope to live a normal life. This is a voice to all the families who have lost their loved ones to donate their organs and spread a ray of hope to patients who are suffering from End Stage Disease.
