History

  • Assess the stool pattern, size, and consistency (by 4 months of age infants usually pass one to two bowel movements per day).
  • Enquire about a toddler’s toilet training.
  • Ask about pain with defecation or blood on stools (anal fissures) /LI>
  • Assess diet. (About breast feeding, weaning practices, whether adding honey to diet etc.)
  • Note current Medications that may cause constipation such as Antacids, Anticholinergics, bismuth, iron, and opiates.
  • Note patient and Family history of Hirschsprung disease or other GI disorders, neurologic disorder, endocrine or metabolic disorder.
  • Older children should be enquired for psychological problems such as Depression, Anorexia, and sleep disturbances.
