Associated conditions

A number of conditions other than a viral URI predispose to the development of sinusitis.

• Sinusitis may complicate aso tracheal intubation. This is also a potential risk associated with large nasogastric tubes.

  
  
  

• Recurrent sinusitis (often affecting the posterior sinuses) is fairly common in patients with moderate to advanced HIV infection.

• Sinusitis is a common bacterial infection in children with neonatal HIV infection.

• Sinusitis may also be part of clinical syndromes such as Kartagener disease, Wegener's granulomatosis, cystic fibrosis and quantitative disorders of immunoglobulin synthesis.
