Treatment:
a. Lactose intolerance requires restriction of dairy products and calcium supplementation.

b. Constipation is treated with bulk agents or mild stimulant.
c. Salicylates are used for one week as an antiinflammatory agent frequently enough to allow musculoskeletal pain to subside.
d. If functional bowel disease is diagnosed the most important component of it is reassurance of child and family members, that there is no evidence of a serious underlying disorder. It is important that the child returns to regular activities. Medication are unhelpful except for a transient placebo effect. Visceral muscle relaxants may be tried empirically (anticholinergics). Relaxation techniques are useful.
