Final Examination

Linkage in the reverse direction will not count as experience for appearing in any of the subject under the super specialties i.e. experience gained under subjects given under column I above will not count as an experience for super specialties under column 2 of the Table given above.


5.3 Admission to Courses


All Students who are undergoing training in Board's Accredited Institutions / Medical Colleges are required to intimate the Board regarding their admission immediately after their admission giving their names, subjects and date of admission through the head of the Institutions/Medical Colleges failing which they will not be allowed to appear for the examination of the Board.

5.4 All candidates (whether they have passed MD/MS or Primary examination) are required to appear in four papers including one paper on Basic Sciences as applied to particular specialty.

5.5 Practical Examination (Broad Specialties)


(a) Only those candidates who obtain a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of theory papers shall be declared successful in theory examination.

(b) Only a candidate who is declared successful in final theory examination will be allowed to appear for the practical examination immediately following the theory examination. If he fails or does not appear in the examination, he will be allowed two more chances of practical examination within two years of passing the theory examinations, but after paying full examination fee. Thereafter such a candidate will be required to take full examination (theory and practical) as a fresh candidate.

(c) Candidates who obtain 50% in the aggregate of theory and practical combined and not less that 50% in practical, shall be declared successful in the specialty examination

(d) NBE will not provide details of Marks/Grading in the examination.

5.6 Revaluation (Broad Specialties)


(a) Revaluation of the answer scripts of the theory papers of the subjects of broad specialties (final examination only) on request will be undertaken on payment of Rs.400.00 for all papers. The request for such revaluation will be entertained once and if received within one month of the date of intimation of result to the candidate.

The result of the revaluation is final. No further request for review of papers will be entertained.

5.7 Candidates desiring to change specialties/part, will be treated as fresh candidates in that specialty/part and are required to comply with all the regulations for that subject/part including payment of full fees.


5.8 (a) Question papers for the last five years final examinations may be obtained on payment of Rs.20/-. Payment is to be made by a Bank Draft drawn in favour of National Board of Examinations payable at New Delhi. Primary Examination is objective type and so papers are not for sale.

(b) A separate request for papers shall be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope of 25cm ´ 10cm size affixed with postage stamps worth Rs.5/- (inland) and Rs.35/- (foreign) if desired by ordinary mail or Rs.11.00 (inland) and Rs.45/- (foreign) if desired by registered mail.

NOTE: The request for the supply of old question papers may be made separately with a separate Bank Draft for Rs.20/- (drawn in favour of National Board of Examinations - payable at New Delhi).


5.9 The candidates must submit two copies of thesis or dissertation as evidence of one year's research work. The details regarding submission of thesis are given in Appendix-II

5.10 All enquires should be addressed to the Assistant Registrar (Examinations), National Board of Examinations.

5.11 Eligibility for Appearing in Super Specialties


A. Medical super specialties and Surgical super specialties (refer para 1.2).

(i) Candidates should be in possession of a recognised postgraduate degree qualification or as specified under each specialty given in the syllabus for medical and surgical super specialties respectively.

(ii) Candidates should have completed the prescribed period of training in the specialty (two years training except in Neurosurgery, Neurology and Pediatric Surgery where three years training is required), after postgraduate degree, in an institution recognised by the MCI/NBE/University as specified under each specialty.

(iii) Candidates should be in possession of a certificate training from the head of the department duly countersigned by the Head of the Institution and produce necessary records as may be required.

(iv) Candidates should submit two copies of thesis/dissertation as evidence of research work in the specialty, as per details given in Appendix-II. Candidates who will be appearing in the subject under the heading Super Specialty (like Cardiology & Cardio-thoracic Surgery, etc.) need not write their thesis/Dissertation if they have already written their thesis during their MD/MS/NBE examinations. However they have to submit a proof in support of their having written thesis during their MD/MS examination.

(v) Every candidate will be required to produce performance record (log book) containing details of work done by him duly certified by the supervisor, as work done by the candidate and countersigned by the administrative Head of the Institution at the time of their Practical examination failing which he/she will not be allowed to take the practical examination. However, a certificate to this effect has to be attached along with the application form for eligibility purposes. The supervisor would also offer his remarks on the training received by the candidate in the log book. Honorary staff members, who are recognised as supervisors by their Institutions or the local University will also be recognised by the NBE.

B. Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics


(i) The candidate should be in possession of a recognised postgraduate degree qualification in Pharmacology or one of the subjects listed at Paragraph 1.1 (ii to xii).

(ii) Thereafter the candidate should have completed at least two years of theory, clinical, practical and research training in this specialty, in an institution recognised by the MCI.

(iii) The candidate should be in possession of a certificate of training from the Head of the Department duly countersigned by the Head of the Institution and produce necessary records as may be required.

(iv) The candidate shall submit two copies of thesis/dissertations evidence of research work in the specialty as per details given in Appendix-II. Candidates who will be appearing in the subject of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics need not write their thesis/dissertation if they have already written their thesis during their MD/MS/NBE examinations in Pharmacology. However they have to submit a proof in support of their having written thesis during their MD/MS/NBE of Pharmacology examination.

(v) Every candidate will be required to produce performance record (log book) containing details of work done by him duly certified by the supervisor, as work done by the candidate and countersigned by the administrative Head of the Institution at the time of their Practical examination failing which he/she will not be allowed to take the practical examination. C. GENERAL


(i) Request for change in dates and venue of practical examinations will not be entertained (under any circumstances).

(ii) NBE will not provide details of Marks/Grading in the examination.

(iii) There is no revaluation of theory papers or practical examination in the subjects under super specialties.

5.12 Examination in Super Specialties


(i) The final examinations will be of a composite nature consisting of Theory, Practical and Viva-voce. The theory examination will consist of 3 papers each of 3 hours duration.

(ii) Only those candidates who obtain a minimum of 40% marks in aggregate of theory papers shall be eligible to take the practical examinations.

(iii) Candidates who obtain 50% in the aggregate of theory and practicals combined and not less than 50% in practical, shall be declared successful.Failed candidates have to take the theory examinations again on payment of full fee.
