Indication :


Theophylline is an anti-asthmatic drug which should be monitored.

Physiology :


Theophylline is given for bronchial asthma, for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and for new born apnea.

Normal Values :


10-20 µg/mL (56-111 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


> 20 µg/mL (> 111 µmol/L)

Test Method :


Enzyme immunoassay(EIA), High Performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC) , Gas Chromatography(GC).

Side effects :


Adverse effects include stomach pain, headache, sleeplessness and nervousness. Toxic effects include abnormal heart rhythms, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, agitation, delirum and seizures.
