Drug Name : Gentamicin

Indication :

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic, which is used to treat infections caused by aerobic gram-negative bacteria. Gentamicin in combination with penicillin has synergetic antibacterial effects against gram positive cocci. Gentamicin has a narrow therapeutic range and may result in ototoxicity (ear loss) and nephrotoxicity. It is mostly useful in life threatening infections, which makes it compulsory for the use of gentamicin. Effective levels of gentamicin can be achieved without overdosage.

Physiology :

Gentamicin is cleared by the kidney and accumulates in renal tubular cells.

Normal Values :

4-10 µg/mL (8-12 µmol/L)

Critical Values :

> 12 µg/mL (> 25 µmol/L)

Test Method :

High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), Enzyme immunoassay(EIA)

Side effects :

Common side effects of gentamicin include dizziness, headache, confusion, nausea, increased muscle weakness in myasthenic patients and skin rash. Nephrotoxicity or kidney damage may occur which is related to the length and dosage of gentamicin. It may occur in as many as 10% to 25% of patients receiving gentamicin and can often be avoided by monitoring levels and adjusting the dosage. Gentamicin may also cause irreversible ototoxicity or ear toxicity that may lead to hearing loss.
