Zidovudine is the first approved drug for the treatment of HIV infection. The drug is a competitive inhibitor of HIV reverse transcriptase which disrupts viral replication because the DNA can no longer elongate.

Side effects :


Zidovudine can cause suppression of bone marrow resulting in anemia or leukopenia (reduced white blood cell count). Other side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, insomnia and muscle weakness. Liver damage, lactic acidosis, seizures and encephalopathy (brain disease) may occur.
