Thimerosal is mainly used as a preservative in certain vaccines to help prevent potentially life threatening contamination with harmful microbes.

Vaccines use 50 micrograms of thimerosal per 0.5 mL dose; this amounts to 0.01% thimerosal in the vaccine
Thimerosal is taken according to the vaccineâ€™s schedule.
Thimerosal is contraindicated if the person is allergic to the drug.
