Mecobalamin(Humabala) generic MeCbl is now prescribed for the treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency and is slowly replacing the traditional B12 formulations like cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin. MeCbl is essential for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system and the formation of blood. It is used to treat anemia, Alzheimer’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, and probably amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Methylcobalamin is the activated form of vitamin B12 and an essential nutrient for the body.
The recommended dose of the drug is 500 mcg tablets to start with.
Adult:
Peripheral neuropathy - The recommended dose is 1,500 mcg/day in 3 divided doses.
Oral : Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Parenteral : Rash, headache, hot sensation, sweating, itching , swelling and pain/induration at injection site.
Methylcobalamin comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.
It is also available as sprays, sublingual supplements and liquid forms for those who cannot digest the tablet form well.
Mecobalamin also comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein or muscle.
Methylcobalamin is contraindicated if the patients are allergic to the drug.
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver disease, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Consult the doctor if you experience any allergic reaction.
Avoid excess dosage.
Methylcobalamin might need to be taken with adenosylcobalamin for maximum benefit.
