â€¢ Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 fatty acid which is present in fish like tuna, halibut and salmon, cod liver and whale blubber.
â€¢ It is used to lower triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
â€¢ Gastrointestinal: Nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, belching
â€¢ Skin: Skin rash, itching
â€¢ Others: Nosebleed, or joint, back pain and muscle pain
â€¢ The usual recommended dose is between 0.5 to 1 mg.
However, the dose depends on the underlying condition.
â€¢ EPA is present in fish oil capsules along with docosapentanoic acid.
â€¢ It should be taken as directed by the physician.
â€¢ EPA is contraindicated in individuals allergic to it.
â€¢ Do not use EPA in a child or a pregnant or breastfeeding woman.
â€¢ Fish oil increases the risk of bleeding, consult your doctor before taking EPA if you are on a blood-thinning medicine.
â€¢ Patients are also advised to control their fatty diet and exercise regularly to achieve best results.
â€¢ Avoid alcohol intake.
â€¢ Caution is advised if the patient is sensitive to aspirin.
â€¢ Avoid use in these individuals.
â€¢ EPA may increase the chances of bleeding when taken with blood-thinning drugs like aspirin and warfarin.
â€¢ It may produce additional lowering of blood pressure when taken with blood pressure-lowering medications.
â€¢ EPA may increase the effect of antidiabetes medication.
â€¢ EPA should be stored at room temperature below 30Â°C unless otherwise specified.
