Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring substance found in cartilage, a smooth elastic tissue that covers the joints in the body.
It is usually obtained from animal sources such as shark and cow cartilage.
â€¢ Dermatological: Hair loss, skin irritation, rashes, hives, photosensitivity
â€¢ Gastrointestinal: Nausea, heartburn, burning sensation in the stomach, vomiting
â€¢ Cardiovascular: Congestive heart failure, changes in the heart rhythm, heart attack, hypertension, lower limb edema.
â€¢ Central nervous system: Euphoria, Severity of existing mental illness.
â€¢ ENT: Glaucoma, hearing problems, inflammation in the ear, eyelid edema.
â€¢ For Osteoarthritis :
The average oral dose is 800 â€“ 2000 mg either as a single dose or in two to four divided doses daily for a period of three years.
Topically applied as a cream for sore joints up to 8 weeks.
Injected into the muscle either daily or twice a week for six months.
â€¢ For Urinary tract infection :
A solution containing chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid inserted into the bladder once a week for first four weeks followed by once or twice a month for five months.
â€¢ Eye application :
It is used as eye solution along with hyaluronic sodium during cataract surgery.
Chondroitin is available in capsules, tablets and powder form and to be taken orally with food.
â€¢ Hypersensitivity or known allergy to chondroitin and shellfish.
â€¢ Not recommended in asthma as the drug found to intensify the disease.
â€¢ The risk of bleeding is increased in patients with blood clotting disorders.
â€¢ To be avoided in patients suffering from prostate cancer as it may enhance the spread or relapse the cancer condition.
â€¢ To be used cautiously in patients with a weak immune system as chondroitin increase the risk of viral infections.
â€¢ Level of liver enzymes may be altered, therefore should be avoided in liver toxicity or liver disorders.
Chondroitin imported from countries where â€˜Mad cow diseaseâ€™ is prevalent should be screened thoroughly because of the possibility of the contamination of bovine tissue with the virus.
Associated risk of bleeding with anticoagulants, antiplatelet agent and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
