Chondroitin generic Chondroitin sulfate serves as an important structural component of cartilage that provides mechanical resistance against compression, shear, and friction. These cartilage act as a rubber-like padding for the joints. Chondroitin sulfate improves the shock absorbing capacity of collagen by delivering nutrients to the cartilage and prevents the enzyme that breaks down. It also enhances the formation of new joint cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate is prescribed to treat osteoarthritis where the cartilage in the joints breaks down. It is often used in combination with glucosamine sulfate or glucosamine hydrochloride and manganese ascorbate. It is also recommended in: • Cataract surgery • Achondroplasia • Costochondritis • Herniation of the spinal disc • Urinary tract infection.

Chondroitin sulfate is a naturally occurring substance found in cartilage, a smooth elastic tissue that covers the joints in the body.
It is usually obtained from animal sources such as shark and cow cartilage.
• Dermatological: Hair loss, skin irritation, rashes, hives, photosensitivity
• Gastrointestinal: Nausea, heartburn, burning sensation in the stomach, vomiting
• Cardiovascular: Congestive heart failure, changes in the heart rhythm, heart attack, hypertension, lower limb edema.
• Central nervous system: Euphoria, Severity of existing mental illness.
• ENT: Glaucoma, hearing problems, inflammation in the ear, eyelid edema.
• For Osteoarthritis :
The average oral dose is 800 – 2000 mg either as a single dose or in two to four divided doses daily for a period of three years.
Topically applied as a cream for sore joints up to 8 weeks.
Injected into the muscle either daily or twice a week for six months.
• For Urinary tract infection :
A solution containing chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid inserted into the bladder once a week for first four weeks followed by once or twice a month for five months.
• Eye application :
It is used as eye solution along with hyaluronic sodium during cataract surgery.
Chondroitin is available in capsules, tablets and powder form and to be taken orally with food.
• Hypersensitivity or known allergy to chondroitin and shellfish.
• Not recommended in asthma as the drug found to intensify the disease.
• The risk of bleeding is increased in patients with blood clotting disorders.
• To be avoided in patients suffering from prostate cancer as it may enhance the spread or relapse the cancer condition.
• To be used cautiously in patients with a weak immune system as chondroitin increase the risk of viral infections.
• Level of liver enzymes may be altered, therefore should be avoided in liver toxicity or liver disorders.
Chondroitin imported from countries where ‘Mad cow disease’ is prevalent should be screened thoroughly because of the possibility of the contamination of bovine tissue with the virus.
Associated risk of bleeding with anticoagulants, antiplatelet agent and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
