Why is Rotigotine Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist, prescribed for Parkinson's disease (PD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS).  It works by acting in place of dopamine, a natural substance produced in the brain that is needed to control movement.

When should Rotigotine not be taken? (Contraindications)

Hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Rotigotine?

Topical- The recommended initial dose is 2mg per day.

How should Rotigotine be taken?

It comes as a patch to apply to the skin, as directed by your physician.

What are the warnings and precautions for Rotigotine?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of high or low blood pressure, heart, liver or kidney disease, lung problems, fluid retention or swelling, mental illness, alcoholism, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause drowsiness or dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.

• Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.

• Patient may develop with increased risk of skin cancer; if it is so consult with your healthcare provider.

• Avoid exposure to sunlight.

ENT - Ringing in the ear.
Gastrointestinal - Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, indigestion.
General - Fatigue, swelling in the extremities, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis.
Musculoskeletal - Muscle spasms.
Central Nervous System - Dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy, balance disorder, sleeplessness, abnormal dreams, depression.
Genitourinary - Erectile dysfunction.
Respiratory - Throat pain, hiccups.
Skin - Redness, itching, excessive sweating.
