Why is Ciclosporin Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an immunosuppressant, prescribed for rejection of organ during transplantation.  It helps to prevent organ rejection by suppressing immune system of the body.

When should Ciclosporin not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with cancer, uncontrolled high blood pressure, psoriasis and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Ciclosporin?

Adult: PO- Immunosuppression in organ transplant- Initial: 10-15 mg/kg/day, starting 4-12 hours pre-operative and continue for 1-2 weeks. Maintenance: 2-6 mg/kg/day.
IV- Prevention of graft rejection in bone marrow transplantation- Initial: 3-5 mg/kg/day starting on the day before transplant, continue for up to 2 weeks until maintenance via oral administration.
Organ transplantation- Initial: 5-6 mg/kg/day as a single dose infusion. Transfer to oral administration as soon as possible.

How should Ciclosporin be taken?

It comes as a capsule or solution to take by mouth with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Ciclosporin?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney, liver impairment, anaphylaxis, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• Monitor blood pressure, serum electrolytes, kidney and liver function regularly while taking this medication.

What are the side effects of Ciclosporin?

High blood pressure, liver damage, tremor, tingling, swelling in the face, pimples, gum swelling, fluid retention, infections, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

What are the other precautions for Ciclosporin?

• While taking oral solution of ciclosporin, use only the oral dose syringe provided.
• Can be mixed with orange or apple juice but not with grapefruit juice.
• Do not take excess dose to make up the missed dose.

What are the storage conditions for Ciclosporin?
