Why is Cefoxitin Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, prescribed for serious infections such as respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, septicemia, and others. It works by fighting against the bacteria in the body.

When should Cefoxitin not be taken? (Contraindications)

Hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Cefoxitin?

Adults- IV- The recommended dose range is 1 gram to 2 grams every six to eight hours.
Pediatric Patients
The recommended dosage is 80 to 160 mg/kg of body weight per day divided into four to six equal doses.

How should Cefoxitin be taken?

It comes as powder for injection (diluted with fluid), to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

What are the warnings and precautions for Cefoxitin?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of stomach problems, blood clotting problems, kidney or liver impairment, myasthenia gravis, poor nutrition, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children less than 10 years old, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Gastrointestinal - Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
Central Nervous System - Myasthenia gravis.
Blood - Eosinophilia, decrease in white blood cells, platelets, anemia, and bone marrow depression.
Liver Function - Elevations in liver enzymes.
