• Benralizumab injection for subcutaneous use has been approved by the US FDA in November 2017 for treating patients with severe eosinophilic asthma .

Why is Benralizumab Prescribed? (Indications)

Benralizumab is a type of monoclonal antibody which is prescribed as an add-on maintenance treatment for treating severe eosinophilic asthma in patients 12 years of age and older.

When should Benralizumab not be taken? (Contraindications)

Benralizumab should not be used in patients with-

• Allergy to benralizumab
• Acute bronchospasm
• Status asthmaticus
• Other eosinophilic disorders
• Present history of parasitic or worm infestations
• Children below 12 years of age

What is the dosage of Benralizumab?

• The recommended adult dose of benralizumab is 30 mg which is administered once for every four weeks for first three doses which are followed by administering one dose every eight weeks.

How should Benralizumab be taken?

• Benralizumab comes as an injection which is available as a single dose prefilled syringe to be administered subcutaneously or just under the skin.
• Benralizumab should be allowed to warm at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before administration.
• The injection should be discarded safely if it is stored at room temperature for more than 24 hours.
• The injection should be given only by a medical professional.

What are the warnings and precautions for Benralizumab?

• Patients should consult the physician immediately if the asthma is not controlled or if it gets even worse after starting benralizumab treatment.

• Do not stop taking systemic or inhaled corticosteroids suddenly as the reductions of corticosteroid medications should always be gradual.

• Patients should be treated for parasitic or worm infestations before initiating benralizumab treatment. If the patients become infected during the therapy and does not respond to deworming treatment, benralizumab therapy should be stopped until the helminthic infection is cured.
