There is no respite from the hot summer months that we experience in India. The blazing heat emanating from the sun's rays in this peak summer season has wiped off the smiles on many faces both young and old.
In Indian cuisine, there are different foods for different seasons, specifically meant to counter the effects of the season. There are a wide variety of fruits, which have beneficial cooling effects when consumed during summer. The most favorite of all is the watermelon.
As soon as the musty heat of summer sets in, our markets get filled with the fragrance of melons! Watermelon and musk melon are very popular fruits in India.
Only 60% of the fruit is edible; the rest is rind and fibrous material. More than 95% of the fruit is water. The melons do not contain appreciable amounts of mineral salts or vitamins.
They are poor yielders of energy. Since most of the fruit contains water, it helps replenishing our dehydrated systems. They are most undoubtedly refreshing fruits and are very suitable for making squashes, sherbets and juices that quench the summer thirst.
So, sail into the room and refill the refreshing ambience with watermelon boats!!!
Have a great summer!!!
