Post-traumatic Stress Disorder edited by Dan J. Stein, Matthew J. Friedman and Carlos Blanco addresses the fact that not all individuals react to trauma in the same way. It covers the broad range of potential responses to trauma, as well as the evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorders.
| 5 QUESTIONS FOR THIS MONTH'S MIND THAT MATTERS |
Professor Dan J. Stein, editor of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit on Anxiety Disorders, and Visiting Professor of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Medical School in New York.
1. What inspired you to edit Post-traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post-traumatic stress disorder is an important condition for a number of reasons, including its prevalence and morbidity. In recent years there have also been many exciting discoveries about the causes and treatments of PTSD. At the same time, PTSD is also a controversial condition, again, for a number of different reasons - there is debate about appropriate thresholds for diagnosing PTSD, and about the optimal methods of prevention and treatment. And I like the format of Wiley's Evidence & Experience in Psychiatry series; these volumes are written by authors from around the world, they include a focus on evidence and on experience, and they comprise both key articles as well as commentaries.
2. What do you think is the most important thing people should know about the book?
The volume is part of the World Psychiatric Association's Evidence & Experience in Psychiatry series.
3. What do you hope readers will get out of the book?
I hope they'll get a balanced and informed perspective on PTSD.
4. Which research paper has influenced you the most?
That's a tough one. Rachel Yehuda and Sandy McFarlane did a paper more than a decade ago on how PTSD is not really a normal response to an abnormal event, but rather an abnormal response in the aftermath of quite common traumas, that I continue to give to my students.
5. What do you like most about your job?
One of the best aspects of my job is mentoring young researchers. I love it when their ideas work out, and their careers progress. |
