Vasectomy is a surgical procedure where a part of the vas deferens is surgically removed

Vasectomy is an effective and safe form of birth control method in men. In this surgical procedures a part of the vas deferens (the small tube which carries sperm from the testicles) is cut and removed through surgery. This disconnection ensures absence of sperms in the ejaculate during intercourse, thus making him sterile. Vasectomy does not affect the volume of ejaculate or potency of a man. Most men get confuse vasectomy with castration. In the latter, the testicles are removed, which affects the production of male sex hormones (predominantly testosterone). However in vasectomy, the production of sex hormones in undisturbed. Therefore there is no decrease in the sexual drive (libido) or in having an erection or in the ability to ejaculate.

In the United States, the surgery is performed on more than 0.5 million men. Despite the fact that it is less costly and is associated with fewer complications than the female tubal ligation, the number of vasectomies is significantly less when compared to the number of tubal ligation done worldwide. Reasons for this include:

1. Equating vasectomy with castration

2. Perception of vasectomy as loss of masculinity

3. Fear regarding pain or complications associated with the procedure

Recent studies point out that men in their 30s or 40s are more likely to undergo vasectomy compared to men of other age groups.
