About Cancer
Cancer is a malignant disease that is caused by the uncontrolled division of body cells.
To begin with cancer may be localized, but it progresses by spreading to other body parts.
There are no typical cancer symptoms and very often they do not appear until the late stages -
Cancer Check
Cancer is often diagnosed by chance, sometimes during a routine check.
A simple blood test can help to diagnose cancers such as those affecting blood cells.
Sometimes the presence of specific biochemical 'cancer markers' can detect cancer, while in other cases, a Karyotype can help .
When cancer is suspected, a biopsy of the affected part could help to confirm its presence. -
Cancer Prevention
Earlier it was thought that cancer is incurable.
But innumerable studies in the recent past have helped to understand that cancer could occur due to a person's life style and that a lot can be done to actually prevent the disease.
Take a look at some of the life-saving tips that could prevent cancer... -
Avoid Smoking / Alcohol
Smoking causes lung cancer but it does no stop with just that. It causes many other cancers too.
Quit smoking ASAP because your body will benefit from being tobacco-free. Also avoid being passively exposed to smoke.
Increased alcohol consumption raises risk for cancer such as lung cancer and breast cancer by several folds. -
Go slow on fats
Go easy on saturated fats.
A meat - heavy diet especially one that has a liberal dose of red meat or trans fat is known to raise the risk of colorectal and other kinds of cancers.
High intake of fats also causes obesity , another trigger for many types of cancers.
It is also important to cut out on excess sugar, salt, butter, artificial sweeteners, soda and processed food. -
Plant - based diet
A plant - based diet is known to lower cancer risks.
Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, beans, broccoli,tomatoes, grapes, spinach, potatoes, kale, Chinese mushrooms, carrots, onion (raw), citrus fruits, cabbage and green beans.
Drink lots of green tea or carrot juice as they contain anti oxidants
Eat brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and whole grain breads and substitute your regular cooking oil with olive oil. -
Seek the Shade
The UV rays of the sunlight is associated with Skin Cancer which is one of the most easily- preventable cancers.
Avoid midday sunlight, wear suntan lotions and use accessories, such as umbrella and sunglasses, to help prevent skin cancer. -
Walk Away from Cancer
Remain physically active and maintain healthy weight to lower your risk of dying from cancer.
Even simple exercises, such as walking, when done regularly for a duration of 30 min, 5-6 days a week, will reduce your cancer risks several folds. -
Health Check Ups
Go for regular health check ups if you have a family history of cancer, if you belong to a high - risk group or if you are above the age of forty years.
Regular screening helps early detection and treatment of cancers, such as those of the breast or colon -
Stress
Stress is one of the prominent factors that breaks down the immune system, required to fight diseases such as cancer.
Take stock of your situation and eliminate stress from your life before it eliminates you! Resort to time- tested methods such as meditation, hobbies, pets or nature walks.
