Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lung. Majority of people who get lung cancer have been cigarette smokers, but not all people who smoke get lung cancer. And, some people who have never smoked get lung cancer. Because of the large size of the lungs, cancer may grow for many years, undetected, without causing suspicion. However, with increase in size of the tumor, a constant chest pain and persistent cough may be seen. The presence of persistent cough can be mistaken for cold or bronchitis, adding confusion to the diagnosis. The type of lung cancer, the number and size of the tumor, the patient’s general health status are several important factors that determine the type of treatment. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy represent some of the standard treatment options. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and cryosurgery represent some of the latest advancements in lung cancer treatment.
