Complications

Whooping cough causes complications like pneumonia, collapse of the lung, seizures and stroke. Death could occur if not treated on time.

The usual complications due to whooping cough are precipitated by the force of the coughing episode. The complications are more severe in babies or in children below one year and can cause death if not treated. The various complications include:

  • Respiratory Complications: Pneumonia, collapse of the lungs, dilatation of bronchi and stoppage of breathing
  • Neurological complications: Seizure, coma, bleeding in the brain, stroke
  • Other complications: Bleeding from eyes or nose, coughing up of blood, urinary incontinence, violent cough followed by fainting, hernias malnutrition and weight loss.
