Causes of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is usually caused by the wear and tear of joint structures due to old age.

The cause of osteoarthritis is often unknown. It is usually a result of the wear and tear of joint structures due to old age. Other causes of osteoarthritis include:

  • Injury in and around the joints
  • Infection from an open wound extending to a joint
  • Weakness of muscles around a joint
  • Occupational strain (E.g. Knees are at risk for a miner)
  • Exertion of the joints due to strenuous exercises For example - weight lifting
  • Obesity (Responsible for more load on the joints)
  • Deformities like bow - legs and unequal length of legs
  • Hereditary causes (runs in the family)
