Vaginitis - Prognosis

Vaginitis - Prognosis

The prognosis for vaginitis is very good, as it does not cause serious complications

If not properly treated vaginitis may predispose to pelvic inflammatory disease that may further result in infertility and chronic pelvic pain. In pregnant women it can lead to problems like premature delivery and low birth weight babies. In addition these women have an increased risk of getting infections like gonorrhea or HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

The patients should be educated on preventive measures such as proper genital hygiene and avoidance of douching. Emphasis should be laid on taking proper treatment as most of the symptoms are treatable and clear up within two-weeks. Recurrent infections usually require therapy for extended periods.
