Ureteroscopy is an endoscopic procedure that is carried out to view the inside of the ureter. Ureteroscope is the instrument used for the procedure. This is a very fine instrument that is made of either a semi-rigid long steel shaft or it maybe flexible.

The procedure is usually done to eliminate a stone either in the ureter or in the kidney by a surgeon called Urologist.

The flexible instrument is usually used for kidney stones that are located in the lower portion of the kidney. The rigid instrument is used to remove stones or other obstructing pathologies from the ureter.

Sometimes the instrument is also used to find the cause of bleeding that is difficult to diagnose using the conventional tests.

Instruments and accessories for ureteroscopy have improved over the years. Ureteroscopes have become thinner in diameter with better fibre-optics that provides excellent view of the inside of the organ. The ureter is a very delicate thin tubular structure that connects the kidneys to the bladder and requires gentle handling. It is about 25 cms or twelve inches in length.

Before the advent of ureteroscopes, the surgeons usually had to do an open operation that left the patient with a five to six inches scar and a long recovery time of a week or 10 days. With ureteroscopy the patient is able to return home either on the same day or in a day or two. The procedure is usually done under general or spinal anesthesia.

My sister had stones, the ER sent her home told it would pass, 2 days later she's back in ER still in serve pain, they gave her more pain killers and sent her home. 2 days after that she's back in ER with sever pain still, each time they did CT scans. This time they tell her, her kidneys have shut down she's in failure, they admit her. 2 surgeys later she comes home. She has had serve pain in her feet and both of her legs are numb. She goes to the docter who says thats a good sign, if it dasn't go away in a few weeks he'll refer her to a Neuro Doc. She is still in terrible pain and is getting referred. My question is, when she had the surgeys could they have cut a nerve or is it damage from the acute kidney failure?

Firstly, if you have signs of infected stone (fever, etc.) you need antibiotics. Secondly you probably need invasive measure to remove 1cm stone. Kiritharan Arunasalam. B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.P.C

Hi Nurse, I just went through this whole ordeal and am still in recovery. If you have pain in your flank area moving down your side, potentially towards your bladder, I would definitely recommend making an appointment with a urologist. If it gets bad, go to the ER. They will probably do a CAT scan and find it that way. Also, if you notice a strange red/orange tint in your urine, that could be blood and is a sign of kidney stones. I had the same irritation and pain in my foot and down my left leg - it actually hurt to move it. Good luck - go to the doctors and drink LOTS AND LOTS of water. This will make it easier. Good luck.

In all of 3months I had 3 lithotripsy procedures..which is a non evasive laser procedure. On my 3rd lithotripsy procedure the shock actually caused the stone to break into half and cause one half to go into my kidney. Therefore, I couldn't have a 4th litho done anymore and instead they had to go in and do a uteroscopy. They successfully managed to retrieve the little stubborn stone but let me tell ya..the complications after the procedure was like going thru the painful kidney stone ordeal all over again. They had inserted a stent up in my urethra and left it there for 5 days...on the 5th day I couldn't wait for them to take this damn thing out..it was causing me so much pain by my bladder. It was putting on so much pressure and literally I was urinating every 10-15 min all throughout the day and nite, not to mention my lack of sleep and painful back.I was miserable. I thought I would find relief the day they removed the stent but...god my nightmare was just beginning. Everytime I went to go pee...I screamed with pain..and usually my pee was just a dribble. I had extreme back pain, bladder pain, you name it I felt horrible. I finally called my doctor and told him the next day that I think things turned for the worst..he was actually surprised. Anyways...I quickly got on antibiotics, flomax cr-it's a antiinflammatory for men but I'm a woman, tylenol 3's and toradol-pain meds....It took 4 days for all the meds to do it's job but gosh never again do I want to go thru this experience.........I wish every patient out there..every success with his/hers procedures....and word of advice...tell your doctor right away if you don't feel right about something. Still in recovery, Barb
