Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD)

RSS Feeds   Text
Restless legs syndrome is condition where a person has an irresistible urge to move their legs while at rest and it is estimated to affect nearly 5% of the population.

Both these disorders are due to abnormal movements disturbing sleep. A person suffering from Restless Legs Syndrome complains of an irresistible urge to move his legs. The discomfort a person experiences while resting is releived only when he moves his legs. Restless legs syndrome is estimated to affect about 5% of the population.

In Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) the person experiences repetitive stereotyped movements of the limbs during sleep (legs more than arms) that typically lasts for about 0.5 to 5 seconds in duration. The risks for PLMD goes up with age. Statistics point out that 5% of the people in the 30-40 years age bracket are victims of this disorder. About 44% of those 65 years and above are also grappling with the condition.

Sleep is disturbed, as a result of these abnormal movements, resulting in tiredness and fatigue which also induces extreme drowsiness during the daytime. Research has shown that nearly 80% of victims suffering RLS also suffer PLMD, although the reverse may not be true in most of the cases.
