What are the causes of Salmonellosis?
Salmonellosis or Salmonella Enteritis is transmitted to humans through contaminated food or by handling infected poultry.
Salmonella bacteria exist in the intestinal tracts of birds, animals and humans. They are usually transmitted to humans through food contaminated with animal excreta. Salmonella Enteritis occurs mainly due to unhygienic food handling and storing.
Points to be noted:
- Contaminated foods, mostly of animal origin such as eggs, milk and beef are the major cause of Salmonellosis
- Raw vegetables and raw foods of animal origin are often contaminated with Salmonella.
- Ingestion of the bacteria in Ice-creams, and some other food stuff can give rise to a bout of Salmonellosis

- The unwashed hands of a food handler who is infected with Salmonella helps to spread the infection
- Salmonella exists in the excreta of some pets, especially those that are suffering a bout of diarrhea.
- Handling reptiles and poultry should be done with care, as they are known to harbor Salmonella.
