Prognosis and Complications of Reye's Syndrome

The mortality rate for Reye's syndrome is between 30 and 50 percent. Early diagnosis and treatment can avoid deaths. Almost all children who survive Reye's syndrome recover fully. Recovery may take considerable time though. Neurologic damage may be permanent in few.

Complications of Reye's Syndrome:

  • Brain herniation is a serious complication of Reye’s syndrome
  • Continuing attacks of epilepsy without intervals of consciousness (status epilepticus)
  • Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH),

  • Chronic excretion of large amounts of pale dilute urine (diabetes insipidus)
  • Acute respiratory failure, aspiration pneumonia
  • Cardiovascular collapse
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis
  • Kidney failure
  • Sepsis
  • Death
