Venetian anatomist Niccolò Massa and Flemish anatomist Andreas Vesalius first described the prostate gland in 1536-38. Till the last century prostate cancer was considered a rare disease – most likely due to shorter life expectancies and poorer diagnostic methods in the 19th century. With the aging world population the burden of disease due to prostate has gone up and is expected to show a further rise in the coming years. Overall prostate cancer is the seventh most common cause of death inthe United States. “Blacks have twice the rates of prostate cancer death as Caucasian men, ... For reasons we don't know, it also starts at a younger age in African-American men.”
