Nursing Home Care - Registration and Regulation

Registration & Regulation of Nursing Homes

The government supervises the regulations for a nursing home care. All nursing home cares have to be legally registered to provide medical services, since they finish second close to hospitals. In other words, nursing home cares are an extension of hospitals.

USA - In the United States the Nursing Home Cares are bound by Federal Laws and the expenses pertaining to the treatment are reimbursed by Medicare.

UK - The preferred term in UK for Nursing Home Care is Care Homes, are registered depending on the locality of the facility, such as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The patient’s expenses are reimbursed depending on the income limit. A financially challenged patient receives financial support from National Health Service (NHS), after an eligibility assessment is carried out.

India - Similarly Indian Nursing Homes should procure a license to operate and this can be obtained after fulfilling the requirements mentioned in the Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act (PHMC). In addition the Ministry of Health (MOH) should also approve the functioning of the home. However the expenses are borne by patients or guardians. On the flip side there are also charitable trusts that provide free or almost no charge services.

When a nursing home adheres to the regulations of the government, the quality of the home care is also in place. Quality is inevitably maintained because of regular checks and license renewals. Most nursing home cares provide basic safe residential and hygienic medical facilities whereas some homes offer extended services in case there is an in-house medical specialist. Rehabilitation units are compulsorily well equipped with specialized staff and equipment.
