Q: 2. What is Spina Bifida?

A: Spina bifida is a common congenital anomaly in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth.

Q:  What is the difference between meningocele and Myelomeningocele?

A: Meningocele is a less common type of spina bifida in which the meninges are forced into the gaps between the vertebrae. The nervous system is not damaged, hence long term health problems are unlikely to develop.

Q: 4. What is the problem with urine passage and what will be required?

A: Affected children may lose control of the bladder. They may have to apply gentle downward pressure to help drain bladder. Sometimes insertions of drainage tubes called catheters are required.

Q: 5. What is the problem with bowel and what will be required?

A: Just like loss of bladder control, bowel control is also lost due to damage to the spinal cord and nerves. This requires bowel training programmes. High fibre food is also advocated.

Q: 6. How will the child move if they have the condition and what kind of care will be needed?

A: Affected children may suffer a multitude of orthopedic problems, requiring special care to the musculoskeletal system. Support with braces etc. may be required. Physiotherapy is advocated. Most of the patients primarily use a wheel chair.
