A migraine attack, once it comes on could last for hours or days. Premonitory symptoms or "aura" occur in some patients. These are generally visual disturbances in the form of flashing coloured lights, zig-zag lines or double vision. There could also be weakness or sensory changes like numbness on one side of the body or disordered use of language. The headache is usually one sided but may become generalized or spread to the temples (area of the head above the ears). The pain is severe and throbbing and may be associated with nausea, vomiting and photophobia (when bright light hurts). The person might feel an absolute need to be in a quiet, darkened room. |
