therapy Palliative or curative surgery: Palliative surgery treats symptom of mesothelioma, without aggressively treating the disease. Chest tube drainage and Pleurodesis, Thoracoscopy and Pleurodesis, Pleuroperitoneal shunt. Another palliative treatment is 'Pleurectomy' used to drain the pleural and peritoneal effusions. Curative Surgical Procedures are performed with "curative intent". Their goal is removal of all gross disease, with the knowledge that microscopic disease will most likely remain. Adjuvant therapy (another form of treatment in addition to the primary therapy) is typically aimed at eliminating residual disease by giving chemotherapy medication. For Pleural Mesothelioma - Pleurectomy or Decortication is the procedure done to treat early stage mesothelioma cancers. Extra-pleural pneumonectomy is done along with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy or gene therapy. For Peritoneal mesothelioma, Cytoreductive surgery is done to remove all or nearly the entire gross or visible tumor in the peritoneal cavity. Chemotherapy is defined as the treatment of cancer using chemical substances as anticancer or chemotherapy drugs to stop or destroy the multiplication of cancer cells. Alimta (Pemetrexed) is a new drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with Cisplatin in the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Alimta blocks the enzymes necessary for DNA copying and cell division and the drug is supplemented with Vitamin B12 and Folic acid to minimize the side effects of skin rash and other effects. Radiation therapy treats cancer by using penetrating beams of high energy or streams of particles called radiation. In treating mesothelioma. Radiation may be used aggressively in combination with surgery or palliatively to control symptoms. Other Treatment: An Australian Biologist has been performing some experiments on mice and has claimed that Vitamin E may help victims who are exposed to asbestos. He claims that alpha-TOS - which is related to vitamin E - can be effective in killing asbestos related cancer cells. The scientist states:"It is promising but in the past, many experiments showing promise in mice have completely failed in humans. Alpha-TOS was "selective" because it pursued mesothelioma cancer cells but caused only minor damage, if any, to normal cells in mice." |
