General Info about Leukemia

RSS Feeds   Text
Leukemia - which literally means "white blood" in Greek - occurs when there is an excess of abnormal white blood cells in the blood. This is a cancer of the blood cells. This is a term to refer to a group cancerous disorders of blood forming tissues. Normally blood is made up of fluid and different type of cells called red cells (they carry oxygen and carbon-dioxide), white cells (they fight infection) and platelets (these help in clotting of blood or stopping bleeding on cut wounds. The blood is made in the bone marrow, which is located inside the bones.

Cancer is a group of more than 100 diseases that have two important things in common. One is that certain cells in the body become abnormal. Another is that the body keeps producing large numbers of these abnormal cells.

Leukemia's are either acute or chronic, and are classified by the type of abnormal white blood cell present. Acute cases generally develop more rapidly than chronic cases. If acute leukemia goes untreated it can be fatal within a few weeks or months. However with treatment, life can be prolonged and in some instances a complete cure may be provided. Approximately 6-7 new cases of acute leukemia are diagnosed per 100,000 people in a year.

Is there a tendency of Luekemia to be genetic. Are there any results of statistics on chances of getting Lukemia to grand childrens ? Essentially, since Leukemia is reason of genetic modification it is likely that it would be passed on to the next generation. Your comments will be helpful

my dad who is 80 years old has acute myeloid leukemia, with a couple of weeks to a couple of months to live. What should we expect from this cancer within that time, and what kind of effects will it have on him as for as pain,or anything else that you can help me with.

This information was very useful and It is much appreciated. I have Leukemia, and my doctors are actually looking for a bone marrow donor. It's really a struggle, and no one really knows how hard It Is. It's a harsh disease, but all you can do is keep faith. That's all I want to do. Nutrition therapy is alright. I had chemotherapy, but It didn't do much. The cancer cells are spreading fast, so we need a donor quick. Everything will be fine, It's all apart of God's plan. But thank you :)
