Treatment for ED

RSS Feeds   Text
Specific treatment for erectile dysfunction will be determined by your physician based on:
  • age, overall health, and medical history
  • extent of the disease
  • tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
  • expectations for the course of the disease
  • Individul opinion or preference

Some of the treatments available for ED include the following:
sildenafil citrate (ViagraTM)
ViagraTM is the first approved non-surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction that does not have to be either injected or inserted directly into the penis to achieve and maintain erection. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for prescription sale at the end of March, 1998.

Viagra does not directly cause penile erection, but affects the response to sexual stimulation.

The FDA recommends that men follow these general precautions before taking Viagra:

1. If you are taking medications that contain nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, you should not use Viagra. The two taken together can lower blood pressure too much.

2. Women or children should not use Viagra.

3. Have a complete medical history and physical examination to determine your cause of erectile dysfunction.

4. Men with medical conditions that may cause a sustained erection such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia or multiple myeloma, or a man who has an abnormally shaped penis May not be able to take Viagra.

5. Tell your physician about all the medications you are taking - including over-the-counter ones - because there are medications known to interact with Viagra.

6. Viagra's use in combination with other ED treatments has not been studied, therefore, its use in combination with other treatments is not recommended.

Penile Injections

Prostaglandalins or Papaverine injections can be used to inject directly into the penis. There is also one pellet like Prostaglandalins that can be inserted in the urethra and can result in erections

Hormone Replacement Therapy
Testosterone replacement therapy may improve energy, mood, and bone density, increase muscle mass and weight, and heighten sexual interest in older men who may have deficient levels of testosterone. Testosterone supplementation is not recommended for men who have normal testosterone levels for their age group due to the risk of prostate enlargement and other side effects. Testosterone replacement therapy is available in an oral form and as a skin patch.

PENILE IMPLANTS
There are three types of implants used to treat ED, including the following:

  • hydraulic pump - a pump and two cylinders are placed within the erection chambers of the penis which causes an erection by releasing a saline solution; it can also remove the solution to deflate the penis.
  • prosthesis - two semi-rigid but bendable rods are placed within the erection chambers of the penis which allows manipulation into an erect or non-erect position.
  • interlocking soft plastic blocks - these are placed within the erection chambers of the penis and can be inflated or deflated using a cable that passes through them.
Infection is the most common cause of penile implant failure and is treatable with antibiotics. In some cases, the infected implant must be replaced by a new implant. Implants are usually not considered until other methods of treatment have been tried.

Hello I am 30 years old an a virgin. I will remain a virgin for the rest of my life because I have exstreme social dificulties and I found that I prefer to remain single anyway. On e thing is really bothering me, I hardly get erections and when ever I do they last for a very short time. I thought about telling my doctor about my condition but I was way too afraid to ask him about treating my sexual dysfunction because in all the E.D. commercials all the men have a sexual partner, they never show any men who are single like me in those commercials. All I want to know is do men with out a sexual partner also talk to their doctor about taking medication to get rid of there E.D?

You should consult with your Doctor...it is important to do because you are young for having this kind of problems. Just be honest with him about your sexual history, after ruling out meds and physical trauma, next step might be psych consult..one thing is you decide not to be in a commited relationship, but having social issues it is a concern. Hope it helps!

You need a surgery called circumcision. This would help get rid of the infection and also help better control of the blood pressure.

Hi I am 24 years old. I am facing a very peculiar problem. I think that the size of penis has reduced a little in this past one year. Though it is reason good enough to worry , but my main problem is not that. Since the past 6-8 months I am not having strong erections. Sometimes I do have them while watching some porn but that is very rare. I do have a decent erection during the foreplay , but after 15-20 mins of the foreplay , when me and my partner want to have intercourse I lose my erection or to be more precise my penis is only 20% erect and thus it becomes even more embarrassing . I do masturbate and have an 70-80% erect penis which stays erect for 15-20 mins at maximum. Please Help

If you are 24yrs there should be no great problem. Size does NOT REDUCE at this stage- in cold weather it may look a bit smaller than normal.

Thanks for the advise , but as I said , I am not concerned about the size,. My main concern is my erection problem which I have elaborated in my post. I would appreciate some advise for that as well.. Thanks

My penis gets quiet hard but bends downward like a banana is this normal I have always thought that maybe it's not fully hard. I'm able to have sex with it but always feel it should be straightening out and not pointing towards the ground. I have a small indentation towards the base of my shaft could this maybe be blocking blood flow?
