Complications and Prognosis of Hydatid Disease

Complications and Prognosis

Complications

Spillage of cystic fluid can lead to severe allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock.

Hydatid disease is notorious for a number of complications. The parasitic infection can recur; metastasize to different organs.

The drugs used to treat the disease have their own side effects like toxicity of liver, loss of hair (alopecia) teratogenicity etc. PAIR can produce mechanical damages.

Surgical procedures and anesthesia are associated with complications.

Mortality is usually secondary to anaphylaxis, systemic complications or operative complications. 100% mortality may occur in neglected cases of Alveolar or lung echinococcoses or due to poor treatment.

Prognosis

Prognosis is generally good in cystic echinococcosis (CE). Complete cure with total surgical resection is possible. Prognosis is worse in alveolar echinococcosis (AE). Early detection and management can reduce mortality.
