Hives can cause discomfort, but it is possible to treat the symptoms until they disappear. In the case of chronic hives, ensuring that the patient is comfortable becomes the primary goal.

If the allergy-causing agent is identified then it must be completely avoided.

Even if the allergy-causing substance is not identified, the symptoms are to be treated.

• Anti histamines such as diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, cetirizine or H1 receptor antagonists. Commonly available medication in the pharmacy include Avil, Atarax, Benedryl, Seldane, and Rantac and are used to provide relief from itching and to control the welts.

• In severe cases corticosteroids either oral or as injectable are used. In life threatening cases intra-venous fluids, steroids and epinephrine injections are administered.

• The following will help to provide relief from the symptoms:-

     • Aloe vera gel

     • Calamine lotion

     • Cool compression / cool baths

     • Milk of magnesia

     • Vit E

If symptoms of anaphylaxis appear, it is vital to seek medical help.
