Secondary Headaches

The headaches that are caused due to some other underlying disease are known as secondary headaches.

Headache maybe the the fisrt presenting symptom in certain pathological conditions of the brain. If the headaches in a person are persistent the doctor may hence want to rule out such a pathology by undertaking a CT scan of the brain.

Some of the diseases that cause secondary headaches include-

  • Brain tumors,
  • Subdural hematomas
  • Epidural hematomas
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhages
  • Severe increase in blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Bacterial Infections (meningitis, Lyme disease, tuberculosis)
  • Anemia
  • Inflammation
  • Infections of ear, teeth or sinus
  • Glaucoma
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Cardiac ischemia
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Certain medications
